September is one of the most underrated months to visit Kufri. The monsoon begins its retreat in the second week of September, and by the end of the month the skies over the Himalayas are crystal clear. The hills are still fully green from the rains, apple harvesting is in full swing in the Shimla belt, and temperatures cool to a very pleasant 12 to 20 degrees C during the day. Tourist numbers are still low, rates are favourable, and the trails are at their most beautiful - soaked with green but drying out fast.

The first half of September can still have intermittent showers. By the second half, clear sunny days with sharp mountain views dominate. September is considered the best month for photography in the Shimla-Kufri region by many experienced Himalayan photographers.

  • Nature walks - The forests around Kufri are alive with birds and butterflies in September. Short walks of 2-4 km can be done without guides on the marked nature trails.

September vs Other Months - Should You Visit?

September sits between the wet monsoon (July-August) and the dry cold season (October onward). It gives you the green landscape of monsoon with the clear skies of winter. Compared to peak winter months (December-February), September is warmer, cheaper, and quieter. Compared to peak summer (April-June), September is cooler and less crowded. For photographers, solo travellers, and couples looking for a quiet hill retreat, late September is arguably the best value month in the entire calendar.
