1. Shimla (13 km from Kufri)

The state capital and most visited hill station in India. Must-do: Mall Road pedestrian promenade, The Ridge viewpoint, Jakhu Temple (highest point in Shimla, 2.5 km trek or ropeway), Shimla State Museum, Christ Church, Viceroy Lodge. Time needed: 4 to 6 hours for a day trip from Kufri.

2. Chail (30 km from Kufri)

A quieter royal retreat at 2,250 m built by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh. Highlights: Chail Palace (now a heritage hotel), the world's highest cricket ground (2,444 m), Chail Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Kali Tibba viewpoint with 360-degree Himalayan panorama.
